Meet Selena Gillespie and Kyle McCorvey from Miami University of Ohio aka the Public Ivy!
Funny enough, we had exact inverse majors. I (Selena) studied Marketing as my major, and he (Kyle) studied Interactive Media Studies. For my minor, I had his major, and for his minor, he had my major. Basically, we’ve got the perfect matching skill set—how cool is that?!
KC: How did you meet? Where?
S & K: Technically, we met in high school since we’re both from Cleveland and went to private schools in the same area. But it wasn’t until college that we officially became boyfriend and girlfriend. The spark really started when I invited him to my dorm (Heritage Hall) during college to help me with a business case for getting into his major as my minor. He helped me build my own website, and I was so impressed by him. From there, the rest is history!
KC: What significance does Miami of Ohio hold for you?
S & K: Miami is so important to me. I’m still actively involved with the university—I serve on two boards and even returned to get my master’s degree in business! For our relationship, it’s extra special because we kissed under the Upham Arch, which, according to tradition, guarantees our marriage (haha). Miami represents a place of growth, love, and so many life-changing memories for us.
KC: Do you think you would have ever met if it weren't for your school? Why or why not?
S & K: Honestly, yes—we might have crossed paths again eventually because we’re from the same hometown. But our relationship in high school didn’t work out, so I truly believe Miami gave us the perfect second chance to rekindle our connection and fall in love.
KC: What's your favorite thing to do together? Why?
S & K: We absolutely love adventuring! Whether it’s drive-in movies, skiing for the first time, trying new restaurants, or just anything outside of our comfort zone, we’re all in. Those experiences bring us closer and create the best memories.
KC: What advice would you give incoming first-years about meeting other people and relationships/friendships?
Don’t rule anyone out—especially that boy who’s been obsessed with you for a while. Sometimes, they really are the best gentlemen—the ones who see your worth and treat you with love and respect. I know a lot of people love the thrill of the chase, but my advice? Pick the person who shows up for you and proves they care, not the one who doesn’t.
