Meet besties Makenna and Maggie from Louisiana State University. Makenna is currently a psychology major and Maggie is a special education/education major. They are actual BFF goals!
KC: How did you meet? Where?
M & M: We met on a campus bus! I (Makenna) am from northern Virginia (I always say DC so people know where) and Maggie is from Chicago, IL! We both came to LSU knowing no one and being 14 hours (at least) away from home. On one of our first days on campus, we were both on the same bus. She was sitting behind me talking about Illinois, and I overheard her and turned around. Being nosey and wanting to make friends, I said how I've always wanted to visit Chicago. She said that was where she was from, and she said she went to DC on an 8th grade field trip and has always wanted to go back. Fast forward 3 years, and I think we've clocked around 32 hours in the car together just driving each other to our hometowns. Her family knows me, and mine knows hers. To know her is to love her, and I thank God that she sat behind me on the bus that day!
KC: What significance does LSU hold for you?
M & M: This school holds so much significance to me and to her. To both of us, LSU represents personal growth and professional development. We both came to this school knowing NOBODY and just hoping that out of 30,000 students, we'd find a few to help us make Baton Rouge 'home' when our real home was 14 hours away. We both never expected to develop such deep and personal connections to so many people and places so far from where we grew up. Going to this school for us has been 100x more rewarding than we ever thought it could be.
KC: Do you think you would have ever met if it weren't for your school? Why or why not?
M & M: I do not think I would've ever met Maggie if it hadn't been for Louisiana State University. We grew up 11 hours apart and had no mutual friends or family. Our separate but simultaneous decisions to come to LSU were nothing short of a serendipitous miracle. Now, I cannot imagine my life without her. She is my closest friend, biggest confidante, and loudest cheerleader. She is the best friend I've ever had, and I don't even mind that she makes our room so messy. When I get married, she will be standing behind me, and my kids will call her auntie.
KC: What's your favorite thing to do together? Why?
M & M: Our favorite thing to do together - that is such a difficult question. Truly our favorite thing is to just talk. I can't even calculate how many hours of sleep we've lost just sitting in the dark in our room giggling until our ribs hurt, but I know every minute has been so worth it. She has taught me a friendship I haven't known since childhood - it doesn't matter what we do, as long as we're together. It could be a 17 hour drive back to Virginia in the snow, or it could be a five minute drive to our favorite local bar. She is the best company I've ever had! She gets what I'm saying when my words don't make sense, and she knows what I feel without me having to explain it. She is a soulmate friend!
KC: What advice would you give incoming first-years about meeting other people and relationships/friendships?
The scariest things in the world right now are the things you will be most grateful for in four years. The 17 hour trip back home is so scary, but you'll be so thankful that the drive forced you to invest more in your relationships on campus because you knew home was too far to retreat to. The 19 hour class load is overwhelming, but the classes are preparing you well for your career and future. The sorority rush is scary and you've never met so many people at one time in your life, but the girls you met that day care about you and they'll have your back when your professor won't push a deadline and your car won't start. College, especially going out of state, is so scary. Every bone in your body will tell you to stay in the comfort zone. Don't. This is the most wonderful time to grow, and I believe in you.
Thank you so much to Makenna and Maggie for sharing your Love Story with us! We can't wait to see your friendship grow and evolve through the years <3
